Height Analysis | Height Assessment
Height analysis is a method of measuring the height of a person or objects using the original footage or imagery to reconstruct past events. A Forensic CCTV Expert who is trained will be able to advise you on the possibilities available to you.
Using a known height or 'Scale Factor' we can sometimes determine the height of a person so as to assist the Court in making decisions as to a Defendant's guilt.
It is not always possible to perform such action and very much depends on the capture perspective and the subject/target distance from the camera.
It might also be possible in the absence of a 'calculated height' to utilise by 'visual interpretation only' fixtures and fittings that would allow a scale to be determined.
There are limitations to this type of analysis/assessment and historically it is better to perform this using the original CCTV camera and system however, we often discover that locations will upgrade their system post incident.
Proportional assessment | Body Morphology
In an ideal situation it would be possible to measure and scale the Questioned Subject or object so that a robust comparison can be made however, if we have a missing part of the puzzle it might not be possible to measure the shape structure of a Questioned Subject or object.
In terms of 'Body shape' we often rely on the visual material that has been supplied to comment 'subjectively' on the body shape or build of a Questioned Subject or object - This is often termed Body Mapping.
Observations of build are often possible when clothing is worn tightly or the Subject has a notable visual shape to their appearance such as a beer belly or paunch.
The wearing of loose fitting clothing can mask the true shape/build of a subject so considering the general/ initial description of a Subject should be treated with caution.
As with height analysis this method has restrictions and therefore we can advise on how to proceed with your case material.
